Sandra Oh and Amanda Peet unpack the themes of Netflix’s ‘The Chair’

The Chair is about to land on Netflix, and for the reason that trailer, we have been past eager to observe.

From author, showrunner, and government producer Amanda Peet, The Chair follows Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim (Sandra Oh) who’s made the primary lady chair of the English division at Pembroke College.

Within the clip above created by Netflix, Oh and Peet unpack a number of the nuanced challenges Ji-Yoon faces by way of the six-episode comedy collection. She’s not solely navigating this male-dominated realm of academia alongside professors Yaz McKay (Nana Mensah) and Joan Hambling (Holland Taylor), she’s one of many few workers members of color on the college, all whereas steering by way of a publicity storm involving her professor colleague Invoice Dobson (Jay Duplass). Plus, she’s elevating her daughter Ju Ju (Everly Carginilla) and caring for her aged father Habi (Ji Yong Lee).

“I believe The Chair is absolutely concerning the current second,” says Oh. “The best way to stay proper now with all of the issues that I believe everybody goes by way of, and hopefully that everybody is extra aware about. Patriarchy, sexism, ageism, what it’s to be a single mother, being caught between two cultures — and it is all a comedy.”

The Chair arrives on Netflix Aug. 20.
